Hello Jonathan,
Some years back, we sat together at a dinner where your family construction business was honored by the
Hamilton Construction Association. I was fortunate to have started my career and spent approximately
20 with Frid Construction, and was able to get to know a number of your family members. I have resided in
Los Angeles for the past 4 plus years, managing some major transportation engineering projects, and see
your name cropping up now and again in the media regarding a movie remake of your Dark Shadows series.
It is very likely that I am one of the only Hamiltonian's living in Los Angeles with such a close connection to
your family business. As I have discovered in my short stay in the US, your series is a household word
and when mentioned, many folks here are very interested in the relationship with your family. Now with
that in mind, if you are ever called this way to assist, it would be a pleasure to meet up with you and
perhaps commiserate this mutual Hamilton - Los Angeles experience.
Reply: Paul, please send your email address through our Visitors' Corner. Thank you. Donald Frid.

Spring is here! The flowers are starting to raise their
heads and blossom, the air is becoming warm and sweet with
the scents of all the blossoms, and the grass is green and
beautiful. I hope the spring is filling your days with
beauty, warmth and wonder! With love to my favorite vampire
and magical voiced actor!

I started watching Dark Shadows when I was about 4 yrs old
and am still a huge fan! I could never get enough of
watching Barnabas Collins. You're an awesome actor, Jonathan
Frid. |

I used to run home from high school (I think it was 9th
grade)to see the original Dark Shadows and fell in love with
Barnabas. Then dates and working after school got in the way
so I missed a lot. Then in my 30's it was on reruns for a
while but always stopped at the same point. Finally about 10
years ago after I'd moved here, it was on Sci Fi and I got
to see the end finally! Of course, I loved it...and wanted
more. :) |

Dear Mr. Frid, Happy lunar new year of the bunny rabbit from
San Francisco! May you have a renaissance of health,
happiness and prosperty in this lucky year! Continued thanks
for all your good work. Thanks especially for the gift of
your reading of Richard III at the DS Festival 2010. Thanks
for your website! Best wishes always, with love, Phil and

Oh, my goodness, what nice words from Johnny Depp about you.
Wouldn't it be fabulous if they gave you a brief part in the
movie, as a surprise for your fans:) |

Febuary, 12 2011 - Paul |
Hello,
I just wanted to send a quick note to mr.Frid, The other day
at work for some reason old shows came up someone mentioned
Dark Shadows and what a conversation took place!! we all
knew the chacters and story lines, racing home after school
to see the show and how the nuns found out how popular the
show was with us and said we were sinning watching such evil
and our souls were in jeopardy....lol If they only knew.....lol |
|
Febuary, 12 2011 - Julie |
|
What a WONDERFUL picture of you in the snow! You looked like
you were going to make a snowball any second and pitch it at
all of us! As I'm sure you know, we in Texas have
experienced a little more of what this Iowa native considers
"true" winter. So maybe I'm not as rusty with snowballs as I
thought. You look as if you enjoy it well enough, and it's
good to see you looking well. Blessings -- Julie :-) |

When I was a small child, I had a Barnabas Collins poster on
the wall in my bedroom. It might have come from a local
newspaper. My father painted glow in the dark paint on the
cane that Barnabas was holding. Later, in 1970, my family
moved and our home street was Collins Avenue. |

Hi Jonathan,
Hope your day was a wonderful one.
Just wanted to ask if anyone has considered making some XBOX
games, WII or some kind of Electronic Dark Shadows games of
people trying to out smart the Vampires, Werewolfs, and
supernatural ghosts of Collinwood?
Might be a great seller as well as being extreme fun even
for the adults...Who knows if they were to make such an item
will you post it for us?....Thanks! |

AS A YOUNG BOY,I,LIKE SO MANY OTHERS ,RACED HOME FROM SCHOOL
TO WATCH BARNABAS COLLINS ON DARK SHADOWS. I THOUGHT YOU
WERE GREAT AND I STILL DO!! |

Interesting the same makeup artist was used to create the
aged Barnabas, as created Dustin Hoffman's makeup in 'Little
Big Man'. Thayer David was also in this movie as the
Reverend. Lara Parker & Thayer David were in 'Save the
Tiger' with Jack Lemmon. Paths seem to cross often in the
acting world. |

|
Jonathan, I think it is great that you will be participating
in Johnny Depp's movie "Dark Shadows". I hope he does
Barnabas Collins justice. You are the one and only Barnabas
Collins in my book. Hope you aren't too cold up there in
Canada. We enjoy anything and everything you post to your
web site, love and hugs Patti |
|

Jonathan-Whether it's behind the scenes or on camera, your
participation in the new DS movie means to me that there is
something about it that interests you enough to participate.
Please keep us posted on how things are going with this if
you can. |

Just wanted to send a quick comment to Jonathan Frid.
As was the Immortality of Barnabas so mysterious so will be
the immortal remembrance left behind by a great elegant
Actor such as yourself.
The old world elegance will live on in everyones minds of
those long ago days when a mystery was cherished for years
to come.
You actually gave the dead Vampire his SOUL through your
acting. Thank You for so many happy memories....Good Luck in
the Future! |

I really want to see Dark Shadows remain very much alive. I
have suggested someone making Fine Porcelain Dolls of the
Cast, Jossette's music box in minatures that play actual
tune., 3-D puzzles of the Old House, Collingwood, Blue Whale
any other possibilities for us collectors of Dark Shadows
one day these could be worth a small fortune to our Grand
Children? |
|
January, 24 2011 - Ella |
|
Forgetting some of your lines as an early actor on Dark
Shadows I believe only enhanced the time era and quality of
the show. After all if we were 175 years old and had been
out of contact with humans for so long would we not be extra
careful in every word we uttered and thought out all the
answers before replying in case be became known for what we
were? |

I pray that you are healthy, happy and warm, and able to
enjoy the glorious scents and scenes of winter. I am looking
forward, with much anticipation, to your next posting. I
turn 50 years old on Saturday (January 22nd) and a posting
from you on your Diaries page, to let us all know how you
are doing, would be a most wonderful “gift”. |

Hey Jonathan,
Hope all is well & that you're healthy/happy, warm/cozy by
the fire! January doldrums have set in but we see a
warm/bright/exciting light at the end of the tunnel with the
news of the 2011 Festival. WE LOVE/MISS YOU & can't wait to
see you in August ... "just" 7 months from today!
Much love & many prayers,

While still in his T shirt, John completes his character of

I really enjoy your work and, of course, am a Dark Shadows
fan. I am interested if you have portrayed Sherlock Holmes.
Your voice and mannerisms seem very well suited. I would
very much enjoy any video offerings along those lines.

Yes, January 2011, Sweet Prince. It does seem like the stuff
of science fiction, even to me and I'm approximately 36
years your junior.
Question: In the nightmare scene, is Richard III more afraid
of the ghosts or of what he (himself) has become? Me thinks
the latter, but wonder what you opinion is on this topic and
many others. |
|
January, 2 2011 - Susie |
YES, "of course" you've got it right, Jonathan! Just add the
"2" if you like! So ... when do we hear about your "Holiday
Resolution"??? Maybe tomorrow, as it's the first
uninterrupted workday of the new year .. still one of your
favourite days??
Much love & many prayers,

All these pictures bring back memories. I remember being in
Elementary school in the 60's and 70's and running home
every day so I can catch Dark Shadows on tv at 4. I even
remember some snowy days where we had to wait extra time for
the buses to pick us up. We'd wait in the cafeteria and
guess what they put on tv for us. Yes, it was Dark Shadows.
Have a happy and healthy new year. |

Back in the day I used to run several blocks home from
school to catch DS in time for the show every day. Some time
later the VHS tapes became available at 20 bucks a pop. I
did not realize how many there were until I bought about 20
of them. I lost the whole lot in a relocation afterward. I
met JF at a book signing and lost the book. Never understood
the marketing that made the original series so difficult to
obtain. Sometimes you see it on the internet. But the
quality of the recording is surprisingly low. I hope Johnny
Dep does not make a circus out of it. I still remember the
headless corpse walking about. |

Dearest Jonathan, I don't know if you celebrate
Thanksgiving, but it is a great excuse for a magnificent
dinner and a chance to be grateful for all you have. I am
grateful for how you were a part of my life as a kid, and
even more grateful that you still are! That darned vampire
Barnabas will always haunt my dreams! |

I'm hoping Mr. Frid might be able to communicate a message
to my old friend Barnabas Collins. His vampiric influence so
greatly enriched my childhood, and I now find his spirit in
every stroke of my brush, in every note of my music, in
everything I create.
I would be tremendously pleased if Mr. Frid could tell him
'Thank You' for me. |

Your story telling of this classic tale is so amazing. You
bring all your tales to life with your voice and your
expressions. You have such a gift for acting and story

You are truly an ICON! |

I have no idea why you were parading around in my dream.
Certainly since I haven\'t given Dark Shadows a lot of

Thank you for being so kind and thoughtful by providing us
with such a wonderful Halloween gift. Your reading of a
“Tell Tale Heart” was spot on and engaging. I love the
effect of having a spot light on your against a black wall
so that I can better see your facial expressions and
gesturing. No one, and I mean no one, articulates as clearly
as you nor puts as much meaning, via tone, pausing/pacing
and volume, as you do. I listened to your reading this
evening on my mini laptop with the lights turned off and my
furry girls, thank you again, sweet prince. Holly Z |

aromas of fall that should be beginning to overtake your

Hello, No one seems to be able to answer this. Maybe you
can. I have even made a trip to the Lyndhurst Estate and
asked the grounds keeper where the Old House was located on
the estate. He said the house used in Dark Shadows as the
"Old House " was destroyed by fire in the 1960's. I search
the grounds for a foundaton. Could you tell me where it
stood from the main house? Thank you TW |

The photos in the slideshow are unbelievably wonderful. I
love the fact that they cover your early years through the
present time. Although it's hard to decide, probably my
favorite are the ones taken in your living room with your
favorite tree in the background. The photo not only reminds
me of you, but also of your mother (and her love of
gardens), and gives me a sense that you are very happy ---
which is my heartfelt wish. |

I am a huge fan, and although I was in advertising and met
many celebrities, you\'ve always stood out. We met at a
party on the rooftop of a brownstone, in the East 80\'s a
long time ago. I told you how I admired your work, and you
were extremely sweet and charming. In fact, we had a very
nice conversation. I just thought I would send this note
along. I certainly don\'t expect you to remember me, but it
was a meeting I shall always think about. |

suggestions of possibilities from your cast? I'm asking this
because I'm supposed to be in a show in early December under
a director who can be nearly tyrannical about executing "his
vision" of a play. I'm sure you worked under a director like
this at some point, and can see both sides of the issue. If
you're willing, could you give me some perspective on this?
Thank you very much. |

I was wondering when the Visitor's Corner will be updated
again. I submitted, I think, about two entries about Mr.
Frid's cat, Sam and was wondering if maybe the cat got ill
and died and it hurts him to be reminded of him. In that
case, I do apologize, being a cat lover, myself. I have a
fifteen year old orange, tiger striped tabby named Thumper
because he thumps his tail against anything he is near. I
know what it is to lose a cat -- if that is the case. My
apologies and con dolences if that is the case. |

Our son has begun his journey to be a writer/performer. Upon
his graduation from Yale in '07, he has lived in NYC and now
plans on moving to LA in the new year. I think of the quote
from Emerson "Make the most of yourself, for that is all
there is of you" What advice, if I may ask, would you offer?
You certainly have made the most of yourself. God bless you
Johnathan! |

This year, somehow, the foursome I play cards with each week
began playing "Dark Shadows" from the beginning. We got
frustrated with Netflix and have bought our own DVD sets. We
are still in January, 1967. I lose a lot at cards because I
am so engrossed in the characters and storylines. I don't
mind....why has this wonderful acting disappeared. Jonathon,
you are the best. |

AHA! Remember "The Open Window"?? Just went back to look @
"The Open Window" again & discovered what your secret
experiment is .. readings on You Tube! What a great idea
that will give your readings so much more exposure! I loved
the "casual" version of "The Third Level" (part 1) .. & that
you were obvoiusly having fun with it! Can't wait to see
what's posted next .. take care, dear Jonathan!

Mr. Frid,
Animals can be the greatest comfort in the world. I express
my appreciation for them by volunteering at a nearby Cat
shelter to socialize the kittens and comfort adult cats
traumatized by abuse. Also, if you ever feel low or sad
visit www. icanhascheezburger.com, where people can submit
funny pictures of their cats and caption them. They're
enough to cheer anyone.
Sincerely, Anne |

Mr. Frid,
I notice I'm not the only one to inquire about your lovely
cat, Sam. Christina from May 23rd, wondered the same thing
that I do, why there are no more pictures and why you don't
speak of him anymore...unless its too hard for you to do so
for some reason....
Sincerely, Anne |

So .. "it ain't goin' t'be easy"? You'd probably be bored if
it WAS easy, dear Jonathan! The difficult challenges often
turn out to be the most rewarding & sometimes even FUN!
Whatever "it" is, you wouldn't be doing it if you weren't up
for the challenge .. bet you have some fun along the way
too! We're hanging in with you ...

Hello Jonathan,
I would just like to say thank you for all the great years
of Dark Shadows. I am an avid fan of the show. I remember
coming home from school in the late 60's and at 4pm the show
was aired.
I used to race home after school in order to watch all the
episodes. I really loved the show and think that you are a
magnificent actor. |

Have a blessed Labor Day; you've been laboring so diligently
to bring us new readings and are deserving of a day in your
honor. Take it easy, enjoy your garden, and find comfort in
knowing that there are so many of us out there that are
praying daily for your good health, comfort and happiness.

I just came to this site. Seen the seriious on Netflix and
was blown away by Dark Shadows. Barnabas Collins was the
origanial Vampire. In the late 60's I used to RUN home from
school to see the show at 3:00!!! Count Patofi was the only
villian in the show I remember that Barnabas was careful to
approach. I have never forgoten the battle of them two. Who
was more powerfull? Patofi's hand had to beat Barnabas.... |

I couldn't make the Festival this year, but I am sure you
were very prepared and on top of it, as usual. My grandma
lived to be 100, as did your mom (and my mom is 90), so rock
on with your bad self, you junior 85 year old, you! |

Your furry ones can be heard in the background of your most
recent recording, the bark of a dog and the meowing of a
cat. They are comforting sounds; comforting because your
furry ones are there for you. It's obvious the recordings
are a family affair. :) I'm expecting Sam to jump up into
your lap or on to your stand before the end of the
recording. |

Jonathan, I met you when I was just a Cub Scout in Flint

You were very kind to a young star struck fan and for that I
will be greatful for ever. Since they didn't keep the show
on tape, I only have my memory to relive that day. Once
again, thank you for your kindness and for sharing your
talents with us. |

Thank you so much for your reading of "The Third Level"; it
is one of my favorite short stories. You read it with all

I have started from the 1st series and working to the end
and I never saw a distinguished actor as Jonathan Frid. His
acting is superb. Hope I spelled that correctly. I guess I
watch it because it is him that plays that character that is
so charming. Great actor. |

Mr. Frid,
Hello, my name is Sabrina. I am 20 and I live in
Mississippi. My father introduced me to Dark Shadows and I
have become very fond of it. I found you to be quite
interesting. I must say, you use to be a very handsome man
back then. It's too bad we all age , but with age comes
wisdom. Anyway, just out of curiosity, how many people have
contacted you that are of my age? |

On Saturday, I adopted another Siamese cat from a local
shelter the day she was scheduled to be put down. She is
incredibly sweet and gentle, and was apparently weaned too
early from her mother, as she constantly wants to suckle the
tip of your finger and kneed. She’s also very partial to
hugs. She is an elegant and beautiful little lady, so I've
named her "Flora McGregor" in memory of the dear mother of a
very sweet and gentle-man. |

Dear Jonathan,
Just completed placing all vacation pictures onto DVD
format.
The expression of delight on the face of my dear
granddaughter reminds me of what a special group of human
beings were involved in Dark Shadows.
She and I ran into you in the hotel and i didn't want to
impose,but,in retrospect,I wish I had taken the
risk, said,"Hello!" and asked if you would have let me take
your picture with my Olivia.
I so hope there will be another chance,Jonathan.
Hope you are feeling well rested after what was undoubtedly
a hectic weekend for you.

This will sound weird, but I have wanted to thank Mr. Frid
for my life. I cry 2 think of this. I was a very lost little
girl & in Jr High life was unbearable. My life with DS was
all I had. I came home from reality, watched DS & went to
live in my world (where I had friends that cared about me.)
I spent more than a year in my world and it got me through.
It is sad to think that a make-believe world is the only
place that a child can find kindness & friendship. |

What a great idea to have us be a part of "The Game" & pick

I have been renting dark shadows for a few months and
watching it for the first time. I have stopped renting and
now I am buying. I am hooked. I was very young when my mom
watched in the 60's. My daughters age 21 and 23 are also
hooked.
LOL my husband tells me that all I do not is watch 'Dark
Shadows". So things are a little dusty and meals are not
quite as planned out. :) I admit my addiction :) |

Can you suggest to Mr. Frid, as a posability for fun at the
convention or at the HODS movie Vista theatre event, that at
some point he muster up his energy and yell out the great
line from the HODS movie that the fans love, "Willie!! You
have betrayed me."" the fans would go crazy if he did that
and the fans love to quote that movie line. ALSO if someone
loans their wolfhead cane to Mr. Frid to use as a prop, this
would delight the fans totally if Mr. Frid raises the cane
up in the air and shouts out that line; even cooler if Mr.
Karlen happens to be there too. Please suggest this to Mr.
Frid for the fans. Thanks for your time and patience with
the fans. We'll love anything that Mr. Frid is able to do at
the convention. |

Hi Jonathan, I know that you are presently being bombarded
by emails...but I couldn't let the moment go by without
saying that I think your mother was a lovely woman with a
warm smile..very similar to yours. Have a great evening.

Thank you for "Dark Shadows" and Barnabas! Because of DS I
became immersed at a young age in Gothic literature,
Shakespeare, and writers such as Wilkie Collins and the
Brontes--but for you I'd have missed so much. I am a college
instructor in English literature. Coming form a home where
our only books were a dictionary and Bible only DS drew me
to a lifetime of reading. Thank you for that great gift.

Hello Jonathan: did you ever stop to consider what your
impact has been on us the fans , as well as television and
entertainment for the past 50 years! Not only did the
ensemble cast distinguish itself in the origilan DS,but it
was your sensitive, compelling portrayal of a horriffic
beast that endeared him ( and you!) to all of us baby
boomers for years!! Kudos to you and long may you reign!
Love always, Lynda

Mr Frid
Your portrayal of Barnabas Collins has impacted television,
theater and your fans for almost half a century and has set
the highest standard of professional artistry that will be
attained by only a handful of actors in our lifetime. We
THANK YOU for showing us what it means to be a professional
in a world where it seems that quality acting has become a
thing of the past.
Respectfully yours
|

It's great to listen to Frid doing his readings. He picks
real good material, and makes the story come alive. I hope
Frid continues to come up with these readings of his. Great
stuff!

Hi Jonathan, I am very happy to hear that you are feeling
better these days. I really admire your amazing outlook on
life... and the aging process itself. I can only pray to god
that at age 85....If I am lucky enough to reach it....I will
have the same feelings. I think it is so wonderful that your
mother lived such a long life.... and that she was with you
through many of your accomplishments. Yes.... you are still
a kid......and eternally young. As vampires usually are.
Love always

Episodes 661 may be ok, however collection 13, episodes 696
through 735 was juicy, delicious, and filled with so many
stories that I could not fast forward, only replay.
When Barnabas and Angelique were once again reunited,
discussing who did what, well that melted my butter!
Such stinging bitterness, yet such need. love it. Love that,
"back in time"to 1897 episodes. Everyone was fantastic! The
raw cohesiveness of all the actors, reveled such
professionalism. I cannot say enough about this series
collection, lucky 13
Only now is is recogized that everyone was working so
diligently to give their best every day, for many hours to
hon their craft, and retain the title: ACTOR, which everyone
did so ever graciously! So glad I was able to view this
history

April, 20 2010 - Karol |
Love the picture change! So debonair, so chivalrous, you and
your character shine through. How much for this cheese cake

Wow! What a wonderful pic of you Jonathan. I was watching
episodes 870-875 ( Count Petofi/Quentin body switch/Josette/Lady
Kitty switch) and the tension in these episodes was superb.
BTW you have aged beautifully..You were beautiful back in
the day and stiill in the day!!

Hi Jonathan,
So glad you're back with the diaries and I LOVE your great
new picture! Back in the DS days, my best friend and I often
argued about who was more handsome .. you or David Selby. Of
course, YOU were always my choice .. and after 43 years that
is still true! Would you please consider adding your current
photo to the storefront photos? I would love to add it to my
"Jonathan" wall at work! Can't wait to see what you have
planned next (Methuselah pictures?). Please take care and
step lightly through all those hoops!
Much love & many prayers,
Susie

For the first time, I am seeing episodes from the past
before Barnabas became a vampire. Now I know the whole
reason that women fell in love with Barnabas. Angelique
caused it all! If she'd know what havoc she'd wreak
throughout the country, would that have given her pause?

I love your photo on the website. You look fabulous in a
suit. So young. You should be very proud that you still look
as good as you do. You have such strong features, and they
just don't fade with the years. It's nice to remember that
you were my first love at 13, and I still adore you at 56.
You're an inspiration to me on what it means to age
gracefully. Hope I do as well. Take care.

How well I understand the ups and downs of aging, though I
am about three decades younger than yourself. The key to
coping I believe is keeping a positive attitude and taking
the best care possible of one's physical being.
Be of good cheer and take good care of yourself.

I WAS ALWAYS INTRIGUED BY BARNABAS COLLINS. AS A YOUNG GIRL
HE CAUGHT MY ATTENTION AS A 175 YEAR OLD VAMPIRE. I FELT
SORRY FOR HIM BECAUSE OF WHAT ANGELIQUE DID TO HIM. SHE HAD
NO RIGHT TO DO WHAT SHE DID TO HIM. HE NEVER REALLY KNEW
WHAT LOVE WAS.

As a child Dark Shadows was my favorite TV show. I recall
when my grandmother told me it was canceled, I ran to the
laundry room in tears. She followed asking what was wrong
and in my bravest voice I replied, "You would be crying too
if they canceled your favorite show!".

FYI for you - Johnny Depp recently said: "I was obsessed
with this character, Barnabas Collins... I came to find out
many years later that when he was a kid, Tim (Burton) ran
home like I did to watch that Gothic soap opera. It was a
very strange thing back then.” Speaking about developing
film, Depp said: “If all goes well, I will jump into that
toward the end of this year.”

March, 31 2010 - Deeply |
Copied from an interview posted online with Mr. Frid:
What does Frid think of seeing himself once again as a young
nervous vampire always looking for a Teleprompter? He never
watches it. "At one in the morning," he says, "it's the
dregs of society that are watching it. I can't imagine the
intelligence level of those people."

Dear JF,
I just wanted to send my heartfelt apology for not
appreciating you as much as I should have over the years.
You've poured out your heart and given so much to me and
others, and I haven't been as appreciative or respectful of
you as I should have been nor have I shown my appreciation
or respect many times. I want to tell you how much I respect
you, admire you, appreciate you and love you as an actor and
a human being. I will never take you for granted again. Lots
of love, RobinE

Concerning the essays on your wonderful website, I think

Hot diggity, a new computer, and I would be willing to bet
you've had times already when you thought the computer
worked faster than you could think. I am sure it was needed,
though, and I trust it will bring you (and by extension, us)
many hours of enjoyment. Don't sweat too much about the DS
stuff, it'll all fall together. It always does. Be blessed
with health and everything else you need to "bring your 'A'
game" to the Fest -- Julie :-)

I adore the annunciations and the drawn out syllables. Radio
stories would be great you're perfect for it.
There is still an audience waiting for you.
My memories linger with Barnabas Collins. How I miss that
character, he has his own personality and eccentricities.
Please do not get me wrong, you are also wonderful Mr. Frid

We were visiting our oldest daughter in Hamilton yesterday &
went to Turtle Jack's for dinner. It's done up in a
cottaging theme, & on one of the poles were signs like
people would put up with their last names, indicating where
their cottages were. One actually said 'Frids', with a heart
over the 'i' !

A cover-up? Hardly! I think many of us completely understand
how real life, or computer problems, can get in the way. It
is enough that you want to communicate with us enough that
this is frustrating to you. We fans are anxious, yes, but
also know that the patience we exert in waiting will be well
rewarded, as we were with "Mayhew". Be blessed -- Julie :-)

Hi Jonathan,
One year ago today I discovered your wonderful website and
re-discovered YOU! In celebration, I decided to watch your
"Fools & Fiends" DVD for the first time ... bought it at the
Newark Festival (thanks to your great niece & nephew!) ...
guess I was saving it for a special occasion like today! It
was wonderful! Last night I watched "everything Mayhew" with
the new introduction and update of Part 2 ... You've still
"got it" Jonathan!
Much love & many prayers,

Hi Jonathan, Just wanted you to know how much my dtr and I
have enjoyed our time together watching all of the Dark
Shadow series. Megan is 14 and a typical teenager.
What makes her different is she has Type I diabetes. It is
hard enough to raise teenagers now but with a lifetime
condition, it presents more challenges. Sharing time with
her is so improtant and watching Dark Shadows has enhanced
lives a great deal. To all of you who were in Dark Shadows,
a humble thank you.

March, 17 2010 - Kimberly |
I just wanted to say that I am intrigued by Jonathan Frid as
he plays Barnabas Collins. I am 39-years-old & have only
recently seen 684 episodes of the original Dark Shadows. Mr.
Frid's work on Dark Shadows has made me a dire fan.
It has been a thrill to discover that many of the actors are
alive and well. It saddens me to know that I'll never meet
Mr. Frid in person, but I'd like him to know that his work
has been a great inspiration to me. Thank you.
Respectfully,
Kimberly

Mr. Frid,
Thank you for all of the joy you have given me by playing
Barnabas in Dark Shadows. I truly wish that actors today
were as good as you are. I have seen your latest photos and
you have aged so well! Keep up the great work!
|
|
March, 16 2010 - Susie |
Hi Jonathan,
Kudos to Bobbi for bringing Episode #661 to your attention!
This is a favourite because we can so amazingly
see/feel/embrace the "vicissitude" (dramatic changeability)
of Barnabas (& Jonathan): from heartbreak/agony "I begged
her not to love me" & "Forget that I am your son" to
anger/determination "Go ahead, shoot me! Shoot! Shoot!" & "I
cannot die because I'm already dead!" Episode #661 WAS
magnificent .. and a prime example of why we STILL admire
and adore you!
Love & Prayers,
Susie

Mr. Frid, Episode 661 is just one of the many great
performances in your role of Barnabas. Perhaps you should
watch more of them. <wink> Be happy and healthy. Jim in

For your fans, Mr. Frid, all the episodes of you in Dark
Shadows are excellent! Thanks for acknowledging what the
rest of us have known for years -- you are a great actor!
|
|
March, 15 2010 - Sheila |
Smiling as I read your short comment on episode 661. Your
revelation is nothing new to your fans. We all have felt and
seen just how fine an actor you were and still are. We all
seem to be enjoying your current Mayhew piece. I wish I
could have seen your work on stage as well. Please remember
that it wasn't just Barnabas Collins we all fell in love
with. Jonnathan Frid has captured our hearts and given us
much joy as well.

March, 12 2010 - Guen |
Thoroughly enjoyed your presentation. May I ask what drew
you to this piece and what others you are entertaining for
the "group"? Perhaps some poetry?
Stay well

March, 11 2010 - Julie |
|
A story as macabre in its own way as anything Poe ever
wrote, "Mayhew" is a worthy addition to your canon of
readings. It suffers none from the pauses and "corrections"
during the reading, and the eye contact is much, MUCH
better, thank you! Seeing those fleeting little bits of
expression along with the vocal interpretation made Mayhew's
descent into the hell of the intellect, where all is thought
and logic, all the more real. I hope all your fans enjoy
this as much as I have. |
|
March, 11 2010 - Yolanda |
Jonathan
You have a fantastic voice ! I love Mayhew ! Why have you
not ever done any of the Audio Dramas for Dark Shadows? I
have them all. They are missing your dramatic wonderful
voice.
|
|
March, 11 2010 - Yolanda |
You are a Truly gifted man and actor! Fans should know there
is so much more to Jonathan Frid than Barnabas Collins! See
you in Burbank!

Read part one last night, then listened and read along ,
then just listened. I was right- it's all in the voice. I
think you could read a train schedule and make it sound
fascinating. Tonight-date #2 with Mayhew-and you!
|
|
March, 11 2010 - Diane |
I just finished listening to part two of your "Mayhew"
reading, and found it incredible. Your voice is so
extraordinary that I could listen to you for hours on end.
Watching you in front of the camera adds so much to the
reading. You bring so much enjoyment to all your many fans,
and we truly love and appreciate all of your hard work.
Thank you!

Dear Jonathan:
Do you mind my asking whether you have had roles in GB Shaw
or Oscar Wilde plays? It has occurred to me that you would
be perfect in something comic like The Importance of Being
Earnest.
Thanks for your time.

dates with Mayhew!!

March, 09 2010 - Nancy |
Dear Sir,
In my humble opinion, your acting career will always be
defined by the role of Barnabas Collins. This character is
an accumulation of personal depth, training and talent. Few
actors have the spirit to showcase a character that will
forever be “yours”. And you continue to be generous with
your talent via your performances, appearances and website
for all of us to share.
Thank you for a legendary character and being a magnanimous
soul.

|
March, 07 2010 - Susie |
Hi Jonathan,
Your recent surprises have left me speechless (well,
almost)! So glad that you have decided to continue the
Mayhew presentation .. Mayhew Part 1 was even better than
the previous "tease"! We can certainly see now, as you said
in the 2010 calendar, that "making tales believable" is your
"favourite way of making a living". Can't wait for Mayhew
Part 2 .. thank you Jonathan!
Love & Prayers,
Susie

Hi Jonathan, I want to tell you that you did a great job
with the video presentation. You have a special way of
keeping your fans enthralled with every performance!
although you claim to be slowing down... this does not show
in your work. Your undeniable spark and talent will never
fade. I'm looking forward to Burbank this summer.
Love always

Dear Jonathan Frid,
I have always enjoyed Dark Shadows from my childhood. It is
partly responsible for my growing interest in everything
paranormal and ghostly. Now I can enjoy it all over again
with the MPI DVD Collections. Thank you for your
contributions to all of us, and the best to you for happy
and healthy days ahead.

I just listened to your recording of "Mayhew" and it was so
wonderful to hear you doing Reader's Theater again -- at
least in your home anyway. The time I saw you in
Crawfordsville all those years ago (Rest in peace, Dean) was
brought back by your reading. Thanks so much for sharing
your voice and I hope it is the first of many. |
|
March, 06 2010 - Diane |
Your reading of "Mayhew" was wonderful. Once again you have
such a gift for drawing your audience in and transporting
them across time and space to become an observer, as we
watch the story unfold before our eyes. Watching you on
camera adds extraordinarily to the experience, because one
can see how accomplished you are, and how much you give of
yourself. I thank you for all your kindness.
|
|
March, 06 2010 - Janet |
Jonathan, I've always wanted to meet you. You and the DS
show kept me sane during a tough time in my life when I was
younger (I'm 53) :) Just want to thank you for doing what
you did on DS. When other girls were hanging Bobby Sherman
on their walls, I had you on my wall. I was in love with an
older man, a vampire. Fondly, Janet

Well, Mr. Frid! While it is obvious from the editing that
this piece did present a challenge to you, it was quite
worth the wait. I am not as familiar with Maugham's work as
I should be, and what a wonderful introduction. You were in
good voice, and the reading flows together in a rhythm that
felt organic to me. What I missed at points was eye contact
with the camera. It would more closely simulate the contact
I note in your live performances. Perhaps we'll see more of
that in upcoming parts as the story develops. Thank you for
another fantastic video gift. Hugs -- Julie :-) |
|
March, 05 2010 - fridfool |
Mr. Frid, thank you for sharing your talents with us on your
website. I very much enjoy hearing and seeing you as the
story teller. I had the privilege of seeing you in person
for 3 of your Reader\'s Theater appearances, but I
appreciate you recording these pieces for us from the
comfort of your home and your hard work for your \"fans\".

Jonathan, you really have done a wonderful job with the
intro to Mayhew (and new material too!). Can't wait to see &
hear the rest! :) Don't worry about deadlines anymore. Only
accountants like me have to be concerned with those--like
April 15th. ;)
P.S.--I'm looking forward to seeing you at the DS Fest this
summer!

Dear Jonathan,
Never mind that running home from school bit to watch DS,
now it's getting home from work to hear you read Mayhew.
It's bad enough I was hooked on that strange soap as a kid,
now you've got me drawn to the web site! In a weird way you
do bite people in the neck and summon them back.

I've just watched the new film... and now wait for the rest
of the story! BUT- while I have said that I wait with baited
breath for updates, your work takes whatever time it takes.

anybody any good if you make yourself "less well" pursuing
something too hard. just saying. everything in it's own good

Hi Jonathan! I have been a fan of yours for many years. Was
a huge fan of Dark Shadows. Had a black onyx ring just like
Barnabas. I have not been able to attend the DS Festivals
but hope to someday. Glad to see that you are doing well. I
did see you at Washington and Jefferson College when you did
Fridiculosness (sp)? anyway I did enjoy it very much. You
signed the program for me. That was such a treat for me.
Take Care.

Jonathan,
I am sure I speak for many. We wish you and others of the
original cast of DS would be able to get parts in the
upcoming Dark Shadows movie starring Johnny Depp. Hey is
anyone out there listening? Perhaps you guys could get
together and have your own DS movie? That would be awesome!

Hi, my name is Priscilla, and I'm 11 years old. I'm a big
fan of both you and Dark Shadows. As I write this, I'm
watching Dark Shadows episode 1054. I just wanted you to
know that I'm one of your newest and youngest fans. I hope
to see you at the next Dark Shadows convention. |

I love your new home page with the three photos. The first
thing that comes to my mind is how much better the guy in
the middle looks than the guy on the right!
I'm glad to hear your health is improving along with the
weather in your part of Toronto! I look forward to the
festival in July and to the many surprises you and your
staff undoubtedly have in store for us.

It is interesting to wonder about how Barnabas would be
spending his retirement now. I don't think he would be
sitting alone in the Old House sipping wine and wondering
what might have been. He saw what his life might have been
when he was in parallel time. The Barnabas and Jossette of
that time lived normal lives and Barnabas from regular time
was mournful because of it. But how do we know how the other
Barnabas life really turned out? The show wasn't on long
enough to go into that. Would make an interesting novel for
Lara Parker to write. Reply: There may be something in the
works that could carry that theme.

Hi Jonathan,
You MUST be feeling better 'cause your mischievous sense of
humor is back! Love the great "Three of the Seven Stages of
Man" pictures and also glad to see that you've acknowledged
the "timelessness" and "studliness" of Barnabas. Bet you're
not a bit surprised that we've known this all along! :)*
Love and Prayers,
SusieReply: More on that likely in the future

I hope to ask this question at the next festival but I
thought I'd try here first. At the end of the first DS
soundtrack album you read from Prospero's speech in Act IV,
Scene I of The Tempest. Your reading of it is brilliant --
the music and reading match so closely it was as if they
were both made for each other. Is there a story behind how
or why this text was chosen?
Many thanks and best wishes, |

I've been a fan since 1966-1971. Jonathan I so wanted to
tell you how I was admired you. I always hoped I would have
the opportunity to meet you. Now, it's probably impossible.
In 2008 I fractured my spine & I'm in a wheelchair.
Not much money to be had. But I wanted you to know that if I
had one wish it would be to finally meet the man i've come
love & have great admiration for. Love, Donna Beres |

February, 14 2010 - Susie Harris |
Happy Valentine's Day dear Jonathan! Over and over, for the
past 40+ years, you have heard us say how much we loved and
adored "Barnabas" when we were kids. And that was the truth!
But now we are all "grown up" (way past that!)... and there
is an even bigger truth ... it's really YOU, Jonathan, that
we love and adore even more! Thank you for sharing and
allowing us to be a part of your life! It means more than
you will ever know. Now ... go tear into that big box of
chocolates and enjoy!
Love and prayers,

glad to hear it's sunnier there... california is still
socked in with fog and rain, and we still have a long ways
to go before it stops. rats. so, you're able to go outside
now, and say, "the sun! the sun!" , a feat Barnabas was
rarely able to do. no, it doesn't take potions, spells or
shots to be able to feel the warm sun... but we do have to
wait for it to come out from behind the clouds. rats again.
as for more to come on the website... we're already holding
our collective breath waiting, blue tinges are showing up in
our cheeks, but , hey, no hurry. [that was a joke, you know.
we're actually quite purple by now. ] |

I've received an email from a Daryl Hundley, who is living
at your former house on Shelbyville Drive in Indiana, saying
he has the scrapbook I sent you back in 1996!! He wants to
send it back to me, but I don't know how he got my most
recent email address, unless he was in touch with you first!
So, I guess you never received it after all, & how
disappointing.

I've given this much thought, Mr. Frid. Those of us who
watched DS with famished glee feasted upon the ostensible
immortality of Barnabas, as surely as he feasted upon so
many unwitting victims. Only now do we know the versatility
and dedication to your art. I salute you, Mr. Frid, for your
punctiliousness in the face of all that. |

Jonathan, Do you have any observations on the resurgence of
vampires in litterature, t.v. and movies? Of course with
Twilight, True Blood, Moonlight and (in the 90's) Forever
Knight; we have seen a resurgence of vampire stories in
various forms of media. Do you think there is some cyclical
nature to the resurgence or some kind of angst like the
economy causing this resurgence.? Any thoughts? I saw
something a few months ago looking at the origin of the
reluctant vampire in films and litterature. I believe it was
on CNN. They showed pictures of various actors playing
vampires but they failed to show you. I and several other's
sent them stern comments that you should not have been left
out of this cornocopia of vampires and that you were the
first actor to play a vampire with angst and reservation
toward his situation. Love always, Mary |

Dear Jonathan, Still wondering if you were consulted about
the new Dark Shadows movie in any way? Or if the rumors that
you will be doing a cameo are true? If you were asked what
role would you like to have? I could see you playing Joshua
Collins very easily. Will your health allow you the grueling
work schedule associated with movie production? We would all
definately like to see you in film but not at the expense of
your health. Love Always, Mary |

Hi Jonathan,
Hope all is well with you while Mark is away. My "Frid
Friends" loved your calendars and I love mine as well ..
it's right beside my computer at work so I can see your
handsome face all day long! Just ordered a couple of your
"Surprise Packages" yesterday and can't wait to add them to
the ones I bought in Newark from your nephew, Don. Love the
great new picture of you and your "treasures" ... with just
a slight hint of a smile! :)

I seem to have missed something. Josette married Jeremiah.
Did they have children? If not, who are Roger and Elizabeth
descended from? Did Naomi have another son?
If there a family tree of the Collins family on some
website? |

Back on Oct. 21, Mike made a good point. If Barnabas could
appear and disappear at will, chaining him in the coffin
wouldn't work. I guess the script writers hadn't thought of
that. While very dramatic, that sequence is terribly
unbelievable!
If was also amazing how quickly Barnabas acquired modern
clothes after his escape and he wasn't fazed by the changes
since the early 1800s.
Your performance, Mr. Frid, was amazing considering your
problems with remembering your lines. I couldn't tell. You
covered well. |
|
January, 24 2010 - Karol |
Mr.Frid,
I truly wish you had taken a cameo role in the new Dark
Shadows movie! You have no idea what a thrill it would have
given your very devoted fans, seeing you once again on the
big screen! That would have just the lure to the theatre, to
see this new Dark Shadows movie. I'm sure this also would
have been a lucrative endeavor for you too. |

One thing about DS that became really apparent, was that
there were no televisions in any of the
mansions/cottages/houses, not one single TV set. It really
takes one back to the 'good old days' when people had to
provide their own entertainment - like the art of
conversation. |

My dear friend Mr.Frid,
in the 60's and 70's i was so addicted to D.S. that I
scarecely missed an episode. from this end however what you
do not know is that it was the soul that you embodied in
Barnabas Collins that is my reason for being alive today.
After all , if Barnabas can make it through I can do so as
well . Thank you for saving my life when i was at my worst.
know you are so well loved and i call you friend.

Hello Jonathan, I have been reading your diaries, and I do
hope that you take care. Currently, I am employed with a
senior independent and assisted living community. My tasks
are varied and my main concern is making sure that our
residents are safe. I so enjoy their stories, as they have
so much to share. I have my favorites among the residents,
and I love them dearly. Please be careful. I know that
medical types and meds are not fun. I'm a med tech, so I
understand your viewpoint. Well I had better hit the books.
These days my life is a juggling act between work and grad
school. Please take care, and know that you are loved.

Your comment concerning the "second D" being dropped from
your name catapulted me back to the Newark Festival and the
hilarious presentation you gave expanding on that very
subject! (Actually, it was on tape, was it not?)
Laughter is such wonderful medicine! Such a balm for the
human spirit!
There was plenty of laughter at the Festival and my hesitant
decision to attend was richly rewarded! (I didn't know WHAT
to expect from a festival attended by "Cult Fans"!)
Can't wait for Burbank as all major reservations have been
made.

Mr Frid,
If I may intrude one more time, I would add that you your
essays are well written and insightful. I particularly
enjoyed your assesment of playing Barnabas. You are honest
and uncompromising on yourself, which I don't think is a bad
thing, although, as someone being on the outside, looking
in, as it were, I can wince at the eggregious errors while
admiring the performances that hit a nerve. Most of all, I
respect your humble nature. No one can accuse you of having
an ego, which is refreshing in itself. |

Mr. Frid,
I have not visited your site in a while, but was happy to
see you "out and about" reciting the works of Maugham and
Dickens. You voice is as memorable as ever and you look
sprightly and enthusiastic. Keep traveling through the world
wide web! |

That's a very surprising comment about John Karlen being
vulgar & rude to his fans - is this true, or was he just
having a bad day? |

Loved you then; love you now!!! Actually I was 8 years old
when I first fell in love with your acting. Although I'd
tell folks I was building a coffin for two. We are talking
about humor, right? LOVE YOU J !!!!!!! |

I do hope all is well with you and your cohorts. As there
has been no new bulletins since December 28, your fans begin
to worry. |

I read this story, unbelievably, for the first time this
morning, and caught myself hearing it in your voice. I think
it would be a natural addition to your repertoire if you
have not considered it already: W.W. Jacobs' "The Monkey's
Paw". This story very much has the flavor of some of your
Fridiculousness and Fools and Fiends offerings in the past.
If you have not considered doing a reading of this story, I
think you should take a look at it. Be blessed today --
Julie :-) |

Dear Jonathan,
When did you realize that Barnabas had become such a
sensation?
The fan mail was certainly an early indicator, but at what
point did the network execs come to you with the offer of an
extended contract? What was your emotional response to this?

Tiresome as I may be, I think of you often. How could I not?
I am the author of "Gazing"; which received attention I
could not have imagined. I still appreciate your personal
touch on that one.
I trust you are well and wish you the very best for the New
Year. |

I never wrote you before, but I have always wanted to tell
you that your portrayal of a vampire beats out anybody elses.
Once, I read that you were not sure about your Collins
character... but I'm very sure it's the best. You're a great
artist, Jonathan. |
