Hi ! I just wanted you to know that I watched and enjoyed the Dark Shadows program when I was young. Besides the actors the thing I liked the best was the big clock in the foyer of Collinwood. I always wanted one like that. It took almost 40 years... but I finally got one. Found it in an antique store in NYC. It did not work and the case was missing one of the cherbs .. but after spending about $ 6,500 dollars I now have a fully functional complete clock. Almost everyone who comes to the house wants to hear it play, and many of them reconize it from the show... without being told. Thanks again for having a great show !! Reply: thank you jf |

Jonathan, Today I remembered the day my dad took myself and
my friend to see House Of Dark Shadows. The massive crowds
of kid's packed like sardines, brimming with uncontrollable
excitement, was a sight I will never forget! There will
never be anything quite like it again I'm sure, it was a
special moment in time. Love always, Lisa Reply: thank you jf |

Hi Mr. Frid I am new to DS. I've watched 463 episodes so far. The human Barnabus from 1795 is much different from the vampire Barnabus of 1795. The vampire Barnabus sort of evolved a little bit in 1967. You're such a good actor I can easily see the many phases of Barnabus! You had nothing to worry about because YOU are the actor that made Barnabus interesting and worth watching! Do you ever watch yourself on the DS dvds? Reply: |

Would like to let other fans know of a great way to see all
of Mr. Frid's movies including the Dark Shadows series on
Netflix. I've been pulled back into it and am enjoying it
immensely. Just realizing how the actors had to memorize all
of those lines every day makes it more amazing. Especially
Mr. Frid who had so very many. Reply: thank you jf |

Hi Jonathan, Please don't stress about your onstage
performances at the festival this summer. We think they are
just perfect! The most important thing to us is that we
spend this time interacting with you on a more personal
basis. I think that I can safely speak for everyone. We care
about you, not just the performances. Love you, Lisa Reply: thank you jf |

Jonathan, It's hard to believe that fortyyears ago my
friends and I used to trade bubble gum cards on my front
stairs, and hang posters of you on our bedroom walls. Now,
thanks to modern technology we can actually send our
thoughts, feelings, and good wishes to you! via your very
own website. Life is truly amazing. Love you, Lisa Reply: thank you jf |

You masterfully played your role as Barnabas, there may be
other actors in the future to play the role but none fairly
to be compared to your works. I often wonder what it was
like for the first actor to play Hamlet or any other
immortalized Shakespearian character. The actor could not
possibly grasp the magnitude of his role or that countless
generations will be enthralled with the character. I thank
you. Reply: thank you jf |

Mr. Frid- I remember an article about you in an issue back in the day (must have been '67 or so) of 16 Magazine ! You remember? hee hee! They covered your "groovy" new apartment in New York City! There were pictures of you in your breakfast snook while reading your DS lines, and in you relaxing in your bedroom! And oh yes, remember the picture where you were looking in your oven and said, "oh no, Quentin's head?!" (still makes me smile) blessings! Reply: thank you jf |

I have always enjoyed the horror genre. When I was younger I
very much enjoyed you as Barnabas. It is to this day etched
in my memory fondly. So glad to hear you are doing well. I
thank you for all the frights you gave not only to me, but
obviously to thousands of others. I wish you good health and
the best. Reply: thank you jf |

Dear Mr. Frid, After watching your monologue about Josette's suicide from "Dark Shadows" on YouTube, I am astounded. It was the scene with Barnabas, Victoria Winters and Carolyn Stoddard in the darkened great room at Collinwood during a violent nor'easter power outage. The last time I saw this was probably when I was a teenager. As a 60 year old, I am amazed. Your outstanding acting brought tears to my eyes. You are the consummate professional. Bravo! Hi Jonathan! Remember me? Mark Paulino? I lived in Hamilton,
NJ. I helped you sort through some memorabilia and provided
feedback on your "one-man" show rehearsals in the 1980s. You
had the dubious honor of riding in my 1971 Plymouth Valiant
several times too:) Glad to know you're well. God Bless! Reply: thank you jf |

What a wonderful poem you've written! I like the rhyme
scheme and it's sounds so natural, not forced or
pretentious! You really should write more poetry - unless,
of course, you don't enjoy it. I like your essays and diary
entries just as much. Thank you for sharing that with us!! Reply: thank you jf |

I nearly forgot to tell you, and would have been completely
ungrateful in forgetting - thank you so much for the photo!
Mark is thrilled with it! He marvels at how odd it is that
something he loved when he was a child has come back around
and into his life again in a most unexpected way. We've
looked at the picture quite a bit. It is a very good one -
though I swear Barnabas' eyes move :-) We're going to watch
the dvd on the weekend when we can relax and enjoy it. Thank
you again so very much! Reply: thank you jf |

Dear Jonathan, Let's be clear, those of us who have followed your acting career know you are master of the craft. These days, what I enjoy most from the web site is hearing from Frid (the man behind the scenes). Hi Jonathan, I know that you have dedicated most of your
life to acting, but I am curious to know at what age you
said to yourself "This is what I want to do with my life"
was it an image that you saw on screen as a boy? or a
beautiful poem that left a lasting impression? I can only
remember you as Barnabas as a young girl, but you have been
fabulous even before that. Reply: thank you jf |

Hi Jonathan, Today at the grocery store I was looking
through soap opera digest and saw a photo of you as
Barnabas, named as one of the top one hundred sexiest
"hunks" of all time. The caption read something like this "

"Bite Me!" into a sexual come on! I don't know if you saw it
for yourself, but it made me smile. Reply: thank you jf |

Hey there. Great job as Barnabas on Dark Shadows. He's such
a great character - he's mean and yet we love him. It's
interesting to note that even though Barnabas is supposed to
be the "bad guy" of the series, people tend to sympathize
with him a lot I think. Burke Devlin is supposed to be the
hero, and yet most of the time I find myself saying, "I wish
Barnabas would just bite that Burke Devlin!" Ha ha ha! Reply: thank you jf |

I am teaching my son, born in the 1990's, about Dark

have a Dell comic book of Dark Shadows. Be well Jonathon!

My son, who is a summer intern at the Paley Center in NYC
(formerly The Museum of Television and Radio), told me about
a blog written by a staffer on the Paley Center website
about why Barnabas Collins is so much better than the
vampire in the movie "Twilight." No doubt you've read
countless stuff about Barnabas and your portrayal, but this
blog is actually a cool tongue-in-cheek (fang-in-neck?)
account. I've posted it below. Hopefully your message
section can fit it. If not, and you'd like to read it, you
can find it at:

You'll always be special to all your fans. I agree with you
that the neck bites would have looked better had they not
been so dramatically staged. You had the right portrayal of
the intelligent, sensitive side of our favorite vampire. thank you jf |

Happy New Year JF! which of course, brings me to past
reflections. While I will always love DS I must confess that
during the parallel time episodes I was lured to the soap
that ran parallel to DS, namely CBS's The Edge of Night. In
all honesty, it seemed that DS ran out of ideas towards the
end. The later scripts just didn't give you anything to bite
on. What good is the past if you can't be honest about it.
Thank you for a great blog. I read it everyday. thank you jf |

dude, seriously, I would have had some reaction to "Dark
Shadows 2009" on your daily dairy, but there is no way to
attend any more conventions for me, and I suspect some other
original fans are in the same boat. I'm really glad you have
started going to conventions again, and I'm also really glad
that I was able to go during the '80s and early 90's. It
does mean a lot to many people to get to see you, and the
other stars. It has all been something we never thought we
would see when we were kids in the '60's. so, carry on, and
just because we are quiet for a day doesn't mean we aren't
out here still watching. You've never been able to get rid

Merry Christmas, Mr. Frid! I'm so excited to have found your
site. I'm 49 years old, and just viewed DS Collection 1 for
the first time (Mom wouldn't let me watch it in the 60's -
she's such a scaredy cat!) Like Barnabas, your show is
timeless; I'm enthralled and can hardly wait for more. I
have enjoyed your readings immensely. It is selfish of me,
but I can't help but wish to hear you read one of my
favorite poems, "Caliban Upon Setebos". All my best to you,
and my eternal thanks. thank you |

Hi Mr. Frid, I was watching one of the CDs of the DS series. At the end of each disc, there is an interview with someone involved in the production. The ABC daytime lineup 'guy' was interviewed on the last one and he said something so very true. Something like this, not verbatim, "There's George Clooney, Brad Pitt but before them was Jonathan Frid." How true a statement that is. You are still quite handsome (yes, I saw the nose pic) and deserving of such a compliment! Good Holidays to you, sir! Fondly, Kathy O. Reply: |

My bf in high school & I always watched DK together and were
in awe of you! Once, though, when I was going to stay
overnight with her, I'd hung a dress in the back car window.
When I picked her up, it was dark. As she got in, I said,
"Watch out for Barnabas!" She glanced over her shoulder and
let out a scream that'd make any vampire proud!! Reply: |

Jonathan, I am the author of "Gazing" and wanted to let you know I appreciate the extras you sent to me during your eBay auctions. Not only that, I noticed that the verification code to write you was also my home address number. Now how ironic is that? Oh, how "Gazing" has created a complex and interesting response from you. You need not worry that I would wish that I hadn't started all this; because I am grateful that it did. It gave us both a medium to speak about the subject and gave you the opportunity to clarify your position on the matter. Did you think I would go away because I had written you 4 years ago? Think again sir. Your responses were elevating to me as I had said, so therefore I am here to stay my friend. Now I have had some time to lament on your comments as inviting they were. Now, having time to consider your comments, I have a few of my own. Having seen the DVD's from DS, which I did not have at the time I wrote you first, I see your character of Barnabas in a different light. By your descriptive, you mentioned lines, ad-lib and other types of "behind-the-camera". I see that now and while my, "Gazing" commentary is accurate and complete, I understand a bit more about the actor (that being you). I think over these years that I have been in contact with you, that perhaps I wouldn't have changed a thing about my comments. Though I know more about you, my opinion hasn't changed and if you though I was in error, then maybe "Gazing" wouldn't be such a part of your "Essays". You and I are of a like kind. You an actor and damn good at it; me a musician hopeful that I never make a mistake. Of course I never have and neither have you. One and the same we are Jonathan. Friends in that respect. I wish you well sir and will continue to visit you. Jon Lioncourt Reply: |

Barnabas' trepidation at the sight of Elizabeth did not
compromise Frid's believability. Quite the contrary. It gave
me a glimpse inside Barnabas' soul. Barnabas' task is
twofold: reconcile internal death and life. Then, he must
sell it to his family. Barnabas stammers. Did it work? I say yes. Barnabas 'speak', however, trails regretfully with yearning and hesitation. "Perhaps...." is his sole reply.

Mr Frid, You are an awesome human being. I have been watching Dark Shadows for over 30 years now and I still am in awe over your performances. You are too hard on yourself about your portrayal of Barnabas. After all, you are only human, (even Barnabas) You added so very much to the show and made it come alive with your introduction. The best moments were with you and Julia. Oh, how her character adored you. Stay well my friend. I really enjioy your site. How does one go about expressing the un-expressonable?
I recall the many years ago when my grandmother first

knew I would love the show, even with all the little errors
due to live production. I am so glad you have found your way

Growing up in the Uk in the seventies I never
saw Dark Shadows, but would recieve hints of it in the few
fantasy-themed film and tv magazines that seemed to make it
across the pond. No internet then! But what always held me
in thrall was the utter sensitive and beautiful portrait
that you created as 'Barnabas', and now finally with the
ease of dvd, all that I imagined might come across in that
portrait of yours is true! Magnificent sir and god bless. Ps. I thought you were wonderful as the writer in Oliver Stone's Seizure, a film that seems to be sadly overlooked. Again, as with Barnabas, you managed to turn what must have seemed on script paper as a fairly 2 dimensional character, into a portrayal acting on many levels of sentiment, pathos and horror. Thank goodness that the fantasy genre has the rare priveldge, at times, of featuring the talents of actors such as you and the great Vincent Price to lift such tales of grue to the sublime and heartfelt. Many thanks again Sir from all your UK fans and god bless.

As a child of the 60's I was a huge fan of
Dark Shadows, and your character in particular. I rushed
home after school each afternoon to watch each continuing
episode. Though Dark Shadows may seem like "camp" when
compared to the graphic nature of today's thriller genre, I
have to admit as a kid back in the day, it sometimes scared
the be-jeebers out of me. Sometimes I slept with a night
light on, clutching a small cross, "just in case a vampire
appeared in my bedroom." Anyway, it was a pleasure to come
across your web-site. I will always be a fan. Thanks for the
memories. Reply: thank you jf |

Loved the Percy Shelley poem you read today
on the Frid Diaries. It brought to mind a story I wrote once
in which Barnabas recites a poem to Carolyn Stoddard. The
poem was called "The Devil in Hell" by the Frenchman Jean de
la Fontaine. As I wrote that scene, I could hear your voice,
speaking those words. The readings are marvelous, please
continue, I'm enjoying them immensely!

Then I turn to the news this morning to discover that Ms. Sumac passed away on Saturday. Suppose she'll haunt some other dreams now? :-) |

| I figure most DS fans must have heard of 'Mr. Science-Fiction', & this is to let you know that Mr. Ackerman, who will be turning 92 on November 22nd, has congestive heart failure & doesn't have long to live. After a short hospital stay, he is now resting at home in Los Angeles. |

Jonathan, I recently got House of DS and watched it for the first time. I love the difference in character compared to Barnabas in the tv show. In the movie, you were definitely not as polite! I love the Frid Diaries - a superb idea! It's really nice to know your thoughts for the day - and to see your sensitive side. God bless you and I hope to see you in 2009. Raina Reply: |

Hi Jonathan: Just wanted to let you know I really like what you came up with. The Diaries are a nice piece to your website. Any news on Johnny Depp's part in the new movie coming about Dark Shadows? I just wanted to let you know, its my 5th time around watching the whole DS series on DVD. Want to wish you happy holidays that are coming up. God bless you. thank you, Brenda Reply: |

Thanks for all of the memories from my
childhood that get resurrected whenever I watch a DVD of
Dark Shadows. I look forward to seeing Johnny Depp's movie
version in '09 and hope you get a part in it. Maybe you
could play Joshua, Barnabas' father. I wish a Dark Shadows
Fellowship could be held in South Carolina. You have many
fans here. Reply: |

enjoy your site, Mr. Frid. When I was
twelve years old and a great fan of Dark Shadows and
Barnabas, you came to Park College in my hometown to speak
on Shakespearean performance. I confess, at that time and
age, I saw only Barnabas as you stood there. Later, my great
appreciation for Shakespeare's work kicked in, so it is
delightful now to have these opportunities to see your
interpretations. Reply: |

First of all I would like to say to Jonathan
Frid I am a big fan of yours. I liked your character on Dark
Shadows I thought your role as a vampire was a great role. I
am glad to see you have had great success in life. I am very
impressed with your site Jonathan Frid. Anyhow I do have a
question I saw two Dark Shadows movies House Of Dark Shadows
and Night of Dark Shadows...Do you know if they are going to
be released on DVD? Nice website you have heard I will visit
it often and see what you add to it.

Mr. Frid, As I face my computer with another night of my transcription duties, I thought I would take a break and relay a thought I had earlier this day. As a young girl, I used to make sure I went straight home after school so I could see Dark Shadows. It occured to me today that had that young girl hurrying home had any idea that later in her life at 51 years of age, she would be able to get a message to her 'hero' Barnabus, how thrilled she would be. Well, I am. And I am proud of your works. I listened to the Cask. Oh my goodness! I am ever so impressed. Thank you for continuing to make things happen. Fondly, Kathy O. Reply: |

HI JONATHAN, It's wonderful that you keep updating the website & now you will hire a web designer. That's great. You have more energy than some people who are in their 20's! Now, I'm recovering from a 2nd major surgery in 7 months. So, I'm glad that I can watch the Dark Shadows dvd's & check out this site when I can. You are so charming! Love, Judy K. still in Chicago. Hi Jonathan, Thanks so much fro the Diarys. It is wonderful to see your comments and activities daily. The south (Alabama) still loves you as much as ever. Our town theatre has finished work on a Dark Shadows production we are preforming next week before Halloween. It is always a thrill. All my best as usual. Your devoted FAN...Matt Reply: |

Mr. Frid, I grew up in a very troubled home. The only thing I looked foward to was watching Dark Shadows. It allowed me to escape the reality of my life and enter the fantasy of Dark Shadows. Thank you for helping me survive a troubled youth. I am now a teacher and have a great family life.

Hi Jonathan, Regarding your favor, I can clearly see the Menu Index, but if I may offer a suggestion--have the Menu Index at the bottom of the page and your Frid Diaries at the top, similar to the way it was before. So when I click on your diary entry, I'd like THAT to be what I first see on the page, and THEN scroll down to the Menu Index for other parts of the website I'm ready to view next. That's my 2 cents. Hope it helps. Take care, Robin Reply: |

Mr. Frid, As a child I remember rushing home from school every day to catch the nest installment of Dark Shadow. The previous day was always a subject of conversation and episodes were re-enacted by aspiring childhood actors in makeshift plays. Thank You for all the memories of "soap oprea we could actually relate to. Reply: |

Hello Jonathan! I remember seeing you in person at the Devon Horse show... probably in about 1968? (I used to rush home from school, at age 7, to watch Dark Shadows. ) You blew my older sister a kiss and I don't think she ever recovered. She's a nun now. :) I'm glad I found this site! Reply: |

| What a
pleasure to have come across your site Mr. Frid. Ive been a
fan of yours for many years. I`ve always thought your role
of Barnabas Collins, Was the scariest vampire of all times.
Im not ashamed to admit I had the scariest nightmares of all
as a kid after watching Dark Shadows. Well Im 44 now, And
just saw House Of Dark Shadows on chiller TV. Did Barnabas
realy die in the end? As I saw a vampire bat fly away when
the credits came to an end. Well that certainly left one to
think thats for sure. Cheers on your website Mr. Frid! Always a fan! Reply: thank you jf |

| Mr. Frid,
It's wonderful to have found you doing well and on the web!
With much credit to my Mother I'm a huge fan; yes, because
of Dark Shadows, but more recently for a quote I discovered
which relates;" horror is when someone you trust lies to
you." Call me a sap, naive I just happen to agree with your
perception. All the best to you! Reply: Thank you, jf |

| Mr. Frid,
it seems that I wind up at this page every day, but I HAD to
say something about your "Ode to Clouds", your diary entry
today. I found myself being swept into both memories of
childhood and my visits to Canada in recent years, good
memories that nourish the soul. You should think about
expanding on this theme to develop new material for your
Festival appearance in 2009. At the risk of sounding a bit
mushy, your fans long for this kind of thing from you. This
was beautiful, thank you for sharing these thoughts and
feelings with us. Reply: Thank you jf |

| Hi, Mr.
Frid, I have been enjoying re-watching all the old episodes
of Dark Shadows. Thanks to modern times, all you have to do
is order by computer and the DVD gets mailed to you. I was
11 when the series came out, & I remember running home from
school and waiting for the show to come on. Hello & good
health to all the remaining cast, thanks for making a great
series! Reply: Thank you jf |

My husband enjoyed the dental x-rays---that's his field, and
I loved the shots of the Hat Party! Got a tad frustrated at
the Richard III scene though---wanted to yell that I could
read Anne, and where was my script? Seriously, I can still
SOUND young and glam! thank you jf |

| I started
as a Dark Shadows fan&was pleasantly surprised to learn of
all of the stage work that Jonathan has done. Were the
Shakesperean roles your favorites? I like that you didn't
allow yourself to be typecast by your role in Dark Shadows.
It's been fun watching the old DS episodes, but I wonder was
any of your stage work ever captured on film? Reply: The nature of stage work is transitory. My best performances (in my opinion) were never filmed. jf |

i viewed dark shadows from '67-71. you are a part of the
wonderful memories i have of a worry free childhood. i was
not able to take the time to see you in california this
summer. maybe, one day you and the rest of the dark shadows
team could appear in florida. good luck with the online
shakespearean readings. continually intrigued: norman Reply: I have no plans currently to be in Florida though I have played there in the past. I will pass your suggestion on to Jim Pierson. - jf |

| I wondered
if you knew that a quote about your character Barnabus was
used about a new HBO show. It was in our newspaper
yesterday. I'll write as it appeared: Like Barnabus Collins (Johnathan Frid) in the classic vampire soap opera "Dark Shadows" (1966-1971) Bill has returned to his ancestral home where he woos his lost love and tries to fit into human society. Like Frid's character, Bill is an unresolved paradox-part seductive protagonist, part menacing monster. Just thought you might like to know they are trying to re-create Dark Shadows in a way. Well, it won't be the same though. Nothing could re-create that. Reply: Thank you jf |

| I'm close
to finished that Grayhal Hall bio, & I can see how, even
though you were friends, you thought she was 'a bit much'
(as you indicated at the Burbank convention). She had a very
strong personality, & you always seemed to be on the quieter
side - I mean YOU not the character you played. I just love
you for who you are, not what you portrayed 40 years ago. Reply: As i said in Burbank, I respected Grayson as a fellow actor. None of us were anything like the characters we portrayed. |

I just wanted to say hello, and to tell you I have been a big fan of Dark Shadows and Barnabas Collins ever since it was first on TV. I even have a collection of the Dark Shadows paperbacks and one of the original scripts of the first show. Also I have most of the episodes on VHS tapes, and plan to get the DVD that is featured on this site. Thanks for all the enjoyment I get when ever I watch Dark Shadows. Hi Jonathan! I heard you're planning on attending next year's DS Weekend in New Jersey. That's great! I hope to attend, also. Today I bought "The Devil's Daughter" on eBay! Hi, Is Jonathan OK? No new messages on the visitors corner. Or is it that there is a computer update going on? Also, I just went to the ebay store and there doesn't seem to be any activity there either. I'm worried, please e-mail me at mchanaust@yahoo.com. Reply: Your inquiry couldn't be more to the point...jf here..."Is Jonathan OK?" you ask. Well, yes and no.I've been around for some 83 years now...and slowing down. It's that simple...but does create confusion, mishaps and slow conduct...as well as a burst of activity now and again..like now. Also, I've lost a certain grip on computer control. My efforts to communicate are usually done while my computer guy is not here. When he is, we are bsy building the site itself. Yes, there is always a lot of computer updating going on.Please help to spread news of this situation around... as far as you can go. Thanks, Mary Austin. |

GREETINGS JONATHAN, I SEEM TO BE CONFUSED ABOUT THE STORY OF JOSETTE'S DEATH. BARNABAS TOLD VICKI AND CAROLYN THAT JOSETTE'S BODY WAS FOUND BLOODLESS. SHE WAS VERY MUCH ALIVE WHEN SHE JUMPED, SO SHE COULD NOT HAVE BEEN BLOODLESS. I THOUGHT THAT THE REASON SHE JUMPED WAS SO THAT BARNABAS COULD NOT MAKE HER WHAT HE WAS. THE AGONY ON THE FACE OF BARNABAS TORE AT MY SOUL AND BROUGHT ME TO TEARS WHEN HE TOLD THE STORY. YOUR READINGS STILL HAVE THE SAME EFFECT ON ME. KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK, YOU ARE FANTASTIC. |

After seeing a number of humor clips, I wondered...have You ever had a fit of the giggles, at any time
on stage/in public/or in rehearsal? One of those strange seizures of humor that you can't control for a
while even after the funny is gone? I've had one (though in my youth at school, it lasted a week in drama class)
so I know how weird and sneaky they are, and I've witnessed a number of them. Merely curious, and probably
not a question you get asked a lot. ;-)

I know from experience there are just times when you need to leave well enough alone, and accept that was the best performance you could do at the time. The sadness on your face talking about Josette conveys all the tone of your voice did not. You REALLY WERE as brilliant as people told you at the time. I look forward to seeing you in Burbank as well. Take care till then -- Julie |

Hello again Jonathan, I was happy to see you posted my e-mail. I really do want to know your thoughts about how DS ended and what you had planned or hoped to do. I've read comments from other people about how you felt, but I'd like to hear it directly from the source. I can't make it to the Fest, but I am impressed with all that memorabilia you have on those tables. Awesome! Are you keeping anything for yourself as a memento of your DS experience? Thanks again |
| May 30, 2008 - Robert |
I believe the scene from 233 was brilliant. The flaws you see, were what gave it it's perfection, and unintended intensity. It didn't seem to me like Barnabas was telling a lie all too well, but resigned into knowing it was a truth that none could believe. The beauty of it, and the sadness of it, was that he didn't have to cover it up, as he took responsibility again, for that terrible night. It was well done. |
